Why Peter Obi, El-Rufai are yet to officially join ADC – Bolaji Abdullahi

Bolaji Abdullahi, the interim national publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has given an insight into why some key members of the coalition are yet to join the party.

Abdullahi while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today said some coalition members like Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party and the former governor Nasir El-Rufai were given a leave by the ADC due to their decision on the appropriate time to join the party.

According to Abdullahi, Obi and El-Rufai had informed the leadership of the ADC of the importance of remaining in their respective parties to complete the election processes within the parties.

He said the duo have been part of the activities of the coalition but are not card-carrying members of the ADC.

Abdullahi also mentioned that over time, Obi and El-Rufai have attended various meetings conducted by the coalition, a sign of committment to the team’s plan to oust President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress from power.

He also debunked claims in some quarters that the coalition party is already facing challenges that could deter it from taking over power from Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

He said, “There’s no problem within the ADC. Peter Obi has been part of the coalition from day one; Peter Obi has attended almost every meeting of the coalition.

“The reason Peter Obi has not come into the ADC as a card-carrying member is because he asked for leave to allow him to complete the elections that his people were involved in the Labour Party. The same thing applies to Malam Nasir El-Rufai.

“And they were allowed by the leadership of the party to complete the election processes that they started in their respective parties before they come into the ADC.

“And that is what I know. He is a member of the coalition and not a card-carrying member of the ADC because he was given permission by the leadership to complete the election process he started in the Labour Party. He specifically asked for it,” Abdullahi said.
