Governor Abba Yusuf Set to Restore Sanusi as Emir of Kano [DETAILS]

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that to achieve this, he will propose a bill to amend the Kano Emirates Law, which will abolish the additional four emirates that currently exist with first-class Emirs.

Recent indications suggest that this will be the first official task of the newly inaugurated Kano State House of Assembly, which took place on June 13th and had Jibrin Falgore of Rogo Constituency elected as Speaker.

According to a source, “The passage of the new law will result in the state having only one first-class Emir. The current Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, may be removed from his position to make way for his nephew, Muhammadu Sanusi, to return to the throne of his ancestors.”

It should be recalled that in 2019, former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje passed a law that diminished the powers of the Emir of Kano. At that time, Muhammadu Sanusi’s authority was limited to overseeing only ten out of the 44 local government areas he previously controlled.

Under the bill proposed by the previous government, the Kano Emirate comprises Kano Municipal, Tarauni, Dala, Nassarawa, and Fagge local government areas. Other local government areas included in the Kano Emirate are Gwale, Kumbotso, Ungogo, Dawakin Kudu, and Minjibir.

The Karaye Emirate comprises Karaye, Rogo, Gwarzo, Kabo, Rimin Gado, Madobi, and Garun Malam local government areas.

Bichi Emirate consists of Bichi, Bagwai, Shanono, Tsanyawa, Kunchi, Makoda, Danbatta, Dawakin Tofa, and Tofa local government areas.

Rano Emirate covers Rano, Bunkure, Kibiya, Takai, Sumaila, Kura, Doguwa, Tudun Wada, Kiru, and Bebeji local government areas.

Gaya Emirate includes Ajingi, Albasu, Wudil, Garko, Warawa, Gezawa, Gabasawa, and Gaya local government areas.

The creation of these additional emirates reduced the powers held by the former Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II, with the then Emir, eventually deposed.

However, this situation is expected to change with the new government of Abba Yusuf, who is determined to restore the previous status of the Kano emirate.

Yusuf, the political protégé of former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, who shares a good relationship with Sanusi, is paving the way for the imminent reinstatement.

It is understood that the bill will be presented to the House on Thursday and will be read by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini, representing Dala Constituency.

Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, whose popularity propelled Yusuf to power, had previously criticised the creation of the new emirates in various statements before the election.

The new government has embraced this sentiment and has reversed several initiatives of the previous administration. These actions include demolishing illegal structures constructed during the Ganduje administration and repealing the Kano Emirate Law.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has consistently expressed his commitment to restoring Kano to its former glory.

He believes that the people of Kano voted for him with that purpose in mind, and he is determined to fulfil their expectations.
