Why We Banned Political Gatherings, Zamfara Govt Official Opens Up

All forms of political gatherings have been banned across Zamfara State, an official of the state government has disclosed.

The Senior Special Assistant to Zamfara State Governor on Broadcast, Media and Public Affairs, Mustapha Kaura said all political gatherings – rallies and campaigns – have been completely banned in the state.

Kaura while speaking during an interview with BCC said the ban affects all the political parties operating within the state.

Stating that the ban will take effect immediately, the governor’s aide said the aim is to end the insecurity in the state and ensure peace and stability within Zamfara.

According to Kaura, the decision by the state government to impose such a ban follows a political conflict that ensued in Maru local government area of the state.

“Thenceforth, all political gatherings and rallies capable of causing unrest have been banned. The government is mourning an incident in Maru local government which claimed lives and led to the burning of some fortune,” Kaura stated.

However, noting that the ban was not indefinite and not aimed at humiliating or suppressing any individual or group, Kaura said efforts are being made to nip the activities of criminals in the state.

“The ban is with immediate effect. Security agencies in the State have been directed to crackdown on any politician or group of politicians that fails to comply with these directives”, Kaura added.
