Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Security (DSS), has provided an explanation for the unusual presence of its operatives at the Emir of Kano palace on Thursday, May 23.
Politics Nigeria reports that some DSS operatives were spotted at the palace of the Emir of Kano on a Thursday morning amid growing rumours of the Emir’s imminent deposition.
This development follows the passage of the Kano State Emirates Council Amendment Law (Repeal Bill), 2024, by the Kano State House of Assembly.
But the DSS director, Muhammad Alhassan refuted reports that their men stormed the palace of the Emir of Kano after the dissolution of the five emirate councils by the State Assembly.
He insisted that no DSS operatives had been dispatched to the Emir’s Palace.
Alhassan explained that the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, was visiting Kano on an assignment and was also scheduled to visit the Emir’s Palace, adding that the visit was postponed due to the Emir’s absence.
“We drafted our men as part of our schedules on the visit of the First Lady Oluremi Tinubu but learned that she was not going there and we withdrew our men,” he said.
“Therefore, the story that our men stormed the Emir’s Palace in the wake of the happenings with regards to the Emir is false, malicious and did not happen.”
