Boniface Emerengwa, a member of the House of Representatives from Rivers State, has publicly declared his support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, breaking away from his longstanding allegiance to former Governor Nyesom Wike.
Emerengwa, who represents the Ikwerre/Emohua Federal Constituency, made the declaration during a visit to Governor Fubara in Port Harcourt on Monday evening.
In a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, the federal lawmaker criticized the struggle among politicians to assert leadership roles within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the state, emphasizing that elected governors are constitutionally mandated to lead.
Having been first elected in 2015, Emerengwa commended Governor Fubara’s achievements in the state, affirming that the governor deserves the support of the people to continue developing Rivers State.
Accepting the federal lawmaker’s pledge of loyalty, Governor Fubara assured that his administration remains steadfast in delivering on its promises to the people of Rivers State.
Emerengwa’s decision means five out of the 13 House of Representatives members from Rivers State now openly supporting Governor Fubara.
The other lawmakers backing Fubara include Awaji-Inombek Abiante (PDP-Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro), Boma Goodhead (PDP-Asari Toru/Akuku Toru), Anderson Allison (APC-Okrika/Ogu/Bolo), and Umezuruike (Labour Party-Port Harcourt Constituency 1).
Despite efforts by national political figures, such as President Bola Tinubu, to broker peace between Governor Fubara and his predecessor Wike, both camps appear resolute in their respective political trajectories.
Wike, who also serves as the Minister of FCT, recently reaffirmed his political strength in Rivers State.
