Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has ordered the release of 22 ExxonMobil Staff, arrested for violating the Executive Order restricting movement in the state to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, Professor Zaccheus Adangor, made this known in a statement sent to POLITICS NIGERIA on Sunday.
Adangor said the oil workers have been released without charges on Sunday morning, following interventions by well-meaning Nigerians.
The commissioner noted that the state government will no longer prosecute them.
The Attorney-General noted the workers were released from the State Isolation Centre at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.
He noted that the state government remained committed to implementing the Executive Order issued to check the spread of coronavirus.
The decision to release the oil workers is coming hours after the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, directed its members to stop operations at all export facilities.
PENGASSAN in a letter by its National President, Nduaka Ohaeri, also directed its members to withdraw all forms of services relating to crude oil production, refining, distribution and supplies from 12noon tomorrow.
