A former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives has said that the people of Rivers State are tired of oppression and dictatorship from individuals who are expected to serve them.
Reacting to the just concluded Local Government Council elections in the state, Austin Opara, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said the success of the poll is an indication that the people of the state are ready for a change.
He said, “What it portends is that Rivers people are tired of oppression, Rivers people are tired of emperorship, Rivers people are tired of dictatorship.”
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Programme, Okpara condemned actions by the former governor and minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whom he alleged is working effortlessly to control the structures of the PDP and APC in Rivers State.
According to Okpara, the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara defied all odds to ensure that the LG polls were held successfully in the state despite withdrawals by the PDP and APC from the election.
Okpara added, “The difference now is that we have a governor who wants to serve and not be served; not a governor who Adolf Hitler is his mentor or Donald Trump.
“Rivers people feel liberated; Rivers people are happy, they came out in their numbers to vote and they are excited,” he said.
