A former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has come under fire for alleging that members of the National Assembly received bribe to approve the State of Emergency proclamation made by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State.
Sunday Dare, a Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Tinubu in a post on X wrote, “We can never forget.”
Dare’s post was accompanied by screenshots of news reports on claims by former members of the Nigerian Senate including Ken Nnamani alleging that they rejected huge sums of money from Obasanjo during his time as president.
According to details of these reports, the former lawmakers had in their claims said that Obasanjo tried to bribe them to support his third term ambition.
Dare’s post comes hours after Obasanjo, Peter Obi, Bishop Mathew Kukah and some other leaders decried the state of Nigeria’s democracy.
Describing Nigeria as a nation with a failing democracy, the listed leaders who spoke at the 60th birthday of ex-governor Emeka Ihedioha called for actions to save the country.
In a reply to Dare’s post, Bayo Onanuga, the president’s aide on information and strategy slammed ex-president Obasanjo for accusing members of the 10th Senate of taking bribe – as incentives – to approve Tinubu’s proclamation and suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
He said the former president was being hypocritical of the activities of the current National Assembly members.
Onanuga said Obasanjo was the one who introduced bribery into the Fourth Republic.
He wrote, “Former President Obasanjo, who yesterday recklessly accused the distinguished and honourable members of the National Assembly of bribe-taking to pass the Rivers state of emergency declaration, was the man who introduced bribery into our Fourth Republic.
“We should not forget this. However, we should be alarmed by his brazen hypocrisy,” Onanuga noted.
