Court gives verdict in APC suit seeking to stop Kano LG polls

A Federal High Court in Kano has declined an application by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from conducting local government elections scheduled for October 26.

The APC, alongside its member Aminu Aliyu-Tiga, sought an injunction to prevent the elections from taking place and requested an order to maintain the status quo.

In his ruling, Justice Simon Amobeda refused the prayers of the applicants and ordered that the respondents, which include KANSIEC, the Kano State House of Assembly, the Attorney General of Kano State, and various security agencies, should be notified to present their reasons for opposing the injunction.

“The respondents shall be put on notice to show cause why the prayers should not be granted,” stated Justice Amobeda.

While denying the interim injunction, the court granted an accelerated hearing for the case. Justice Amobeda directed all parties to file necessary documents swiftly to ensure the timely resolution of the matter.

“No party shall undertake any action that may prejudice the hearing or quick determination of this case,” the judge further emphasized.

The case has been adjourned to October 4 for the hearing.

Meanwhile, a separate ruling by a Kano State High Court on September 24 restrained 19 political parties from taking any steps that could disrupt the upcoming local government elections in Kano State.
