The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have disagreed with President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, Mamman Daura, asking parties to jettison zoning and dwell on competence.
POLITICS NIGERIA had reported that Daura in an interview on Tuesday said that the 2023 presidency should not be based on rotation but competence should be as a criterion for fielding candidates for the 2023 general election.
But the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) rejected the call made by the President’s nephew. The APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena on Wednesday said that the party would do its zoning at the appropriate time.
He said: “That is Mamman Daura’s Opinion. Everybody has their own opinion and right to say ‘this is how I want the system to go’. “Everybody can come up with his view.
“We have different people who have come up with different opinions on this matter.
But it is not a big deal. At the appropriate time, the party will sit and do its zoning formula, just like any other party. “So, it is not a problem.”
Similarly, the PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Diran Odeyemi, said Daura’s opinion is not binding on the party.
“It is his personal opinion and it is not binding on the PDP as a party. The PDP is an organized party that appreciates zoning.
“So, at the appropriate time, we shall come up with our zoning formula which will define where the national chairman will come from and where our presidential candidate will come from,” he said.
Competence must be the prime requirement
But every zone has a rich pool of competent candidates
Selection of candidates should normally be a function of many criteria. Zone and competence must occupy prime if place
APC; you can determine where your everything will come from or do whatever you want; if Nigeria is not genuinely restructured to a real Federalism, there should never be an election to produce the next President of Nigeria.
Keep your opinion to yourself Mr Daura, competent person, so that you people will begin to claim that you the northern people are the most competent people for the job abi, tell us about restructuring and we’ll listen to you
Mamaman Daura ur suggestion is only but good for administration in family house. This is not a place of family affair where u want Competence to be the first criteria for presidency. Everyone is capable if it comes to that even me. That virtue should be put aside and go by the strategy and laid down precept being used.
