2023: Fresh poll gives Peter Obi lead

A recently-conducted survey facilitated by Market Trends International (MTI) in respect of the forthcoming 2023 presidential election has placed Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), among others.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that in a statement on Wednesday by MTI’s Executive Director, Victor Ebhomenye, the nationwide opinion survey saw the former Anambra State governor garnering the highest favourable rating to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari with 44% of the respondents indicating they will vote for the Labour Party candidate in next month’s presidential election.

“Peter Obi has picked up pace in the race since he declared interest to run with the Labour Party as the party’s presidential candidate at its national convention and presidential primary in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, on Monday, 30th of May after other aspirants like former presidential adviser, Professor Pat Utomi; Faduri Joseph and Olubusola Emmanuel-Tella, stepped down.

“With Mr Obi’s emergence, the party may receive boosts to achieve lasting alliance talks with the New Nigeria Peoples Party- NNPP (this alliance is said to have collapsed at the moment); Zenith Labour Party (ZLP); Allied Peoples Movement (APM); National Rescue Movement (NRM); Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), among others before the February 2023 presidential race.

“The proposed alliance has halted the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its main opposition, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), from dominating the upcoming elections,” Ebhomenye said.

Earlier, in December 2022, a poll also tipped Obi to emerge victorious.

The poll conducted by NOI Polls Limited and commissioned by Anap Foundation showed that Obi is ahead of the three other frontline candidates.
