US mourns Iman who saved 262 Christians from Plateau attack
The United States of America has mourned the passing of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi who saved over 250 Christians during a terrorist attack in Plateau State.
Abdullahi, a native of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State died on January 15, 2026, at the age of 90.
Eulogised by many, Abdullahi was said to have lived a life defined by courage, love and uncommon humanity.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the US Mission in Nigeria described Abdullahi as a fearless advocate of religious tolerance.
The US also said that the cleric’s action is an example of legacy of peace and acceptance that inspires both Nigerians and Americans alike.
It said, “Mission Nigeria offers condolences to the loved ones of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi following his passing on January 15.
“Imam Abdullahi was a fearless advocate for religious tolerance and had a long history of outreach across religious communities.
“The Department of State formally recognised Imam Abdullahi with the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award for his courageous efforts in June of 2018 which saved the lives of hundreds of Christians who were being attacked in Barkin Ladi, Plateau state.
“His humanity positively manifested interfaith coexistence and harmony, and we know his legacy of peace and acceptance will live on and continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike,” the US Mission in Nigeria said in the statement.
