Peter Obi confirms plan to contest 2027 presidential election

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has assured his supporters that he plans to contest for president in the 2027 election.

Obi disclosed this during the ongoing African Democratic Congress (ADC) campaign ahead of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

The former governor who dumped the Labour Party for the ADC in December 2025 said he has no intention to play a secondary role – running mate to any presidential candidate.

Recall that members of the Obidient Movement had announced that they have no plans to support Obi as a vice presidential candidate.

According to the movement’s leadership, they would only support Peter Obi if he contests as a presidential candidate in the forthcoming poll.

This stance by his supporters, promoted a comment from the spokesperson of the ADC, Nooaji Abdullahi who cautioned them to work towards prioritising the party’s unity.

However, during the campaign, Obi dismissed claims that he had agreed to the request to deputise any 2027 presidential candidate.

Stating that he would appear on the ballot as a principal candidate in the 2027 election, Obi said, “You see this coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me.”

Continuing, he added, “Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I come back, you will see. I assure you.”
