JUST IN: Senate Holds Emergency Plenary on Electoral Act Amendment amid NASS Protest

The Senate on Tuesday opened an emergency plenary session following rising tension over recent amendments to the Electoral Act.
The session is focused on public backlash triggered by changes affecting the electronic transmission of election results.
This development comes days after the National Assembly passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026.
Since then, pressure has mounted on lawmakers from different quarters of society. Civil society groups, opposition parties, labour unions, professional associations, youth groups, and regional leaders have all raised concerns. Many argue that the amendments could weaken the integrity and transparency of future elections.
Early on Tuesday, protesters gathered around the National Assembly complex. They arrived in large numbers, holding placards and chanting slogans.
Their demands were clear. They want the Senate to restore provisions that support real-time electronic transmission of election results. They also called for openness in the lawmaking process.
Security was visibly tightened around the complex as the protests continued. Despite the demonstrations, the Senate proceeded with the emergency sitting.
The session is being presided over by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
The emergency plenary was formally announced on Sunday through a statement issued by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo.
“The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10, 2026,” the statement said.
Plenary commenced at about noon. Lawmakers are expected to deliberate extensively on the controversial amendments as protests persist outside the National Assembly.

Have we all seen the type of person Senate president is, when ever he wants any position that needs the whole Nigeria he will FAIL and fall like wall. He is surely worst Senate president I have seen that can’t stand up for the mass but his pocket.
We Nigerian also need emergency sitting on matters related to genocide for innocent people in kwara and benue state
The Christains Killings so many! (Kaduna Benue, Plateau ……….)
It is a shame that the present government at the federal level could not at least provide a safe environment for it’s citizens. Rather they could muster enough strength to destabilise other political organization’s in their quest to make Nigeria a China styled ONE PARTY STATE. All the governors who are defecting to APC are self- centered individual who in my own opinion has nothing more to offer their respective state. Please president Tinubu, Nigeria needs a better security structure that will be grassroot origin. Let each community provide its own internal security while the police maintain peace and tranquility and the soldiers defend our dear Nation. That will be the solution to banditry and other heinous criminal activities.
This is my candid opinion
