“I Will Support Whoever Emerges as ADC Presidential Candidate” — Amaechi
Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has pledged his full support to the eventual presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), regardless of their region of origin.
Speaking in Kano, Amaechi said that while regional dynamics are important, his priority is the unity and strength of the party ahead of the 2025 general elections.
“I will support whoever emerges. The ADC must focus on picking the best candidate who can deliver results and convince Nigerians that positive change is coming,” he said.
Amaechi, who has indicated his intention to contest for the party’s presidential nomination, also stressed that the party should consider key factors such as the candidate’s capacity, age, and respect for the informal rotation of power between the North and South.
He warned that fielding a candidate from the North prematurely could make it harder for the party to win support in southern Nigeria. However, he reiterated that regional considerations would not affect his personal support for the candidate chosen by the party.
“If you choose someone from the North now, it will be difficult to get the South to accept it, because they will ask, ‘Why is there always a problem only when power shifts to the South?’” Amaechi said.
Despite the regional considerations, Amaechi reaffirmed his commitment to the party’s unity and pledged to support the eventual ADC presidential candidate, regardless of their region of origin.
“Whether someone is from the South or the North doesn’t matter to me; I will support whoever emerges as the candidate,” he said.
Amaechi, who has indicated his intention to contest for the ADC presidential nomination, also promised to serve only a single four-year term to ensure power returns to the North in line with the informal rotation principle.
