2027 elections: My son free to remain in APC, says El-Rufai

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, says his son, Mohammed Bello, remains a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by personal conviction despite his criticism of the ruling party.

Bello represents Kaduna North federal constituency in the 10th House of Representatives.

El-Rufai spoke on Thursday evening during an appearance on BBC Hausa Service shortly after he alleged that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) attempted to detain him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on his return from Egypt.

The former governor, who is now a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said his son is old enough to determine his political affiliation.

He said, “My son Bello was elected under the platform of the APC and his electorate seem to be happy with the work he is doing, so since he is an adult of over 30 years, he can make his own choices. Politics is about personal preference.”

El-Rufai added that his son’s decision to remain in the APC does not contradict his own opposition to the party.

He said, “If he wants to remain in the APC without getting involved in the party’s wrongdoing because of the home training we gave him, then Alhamdulillah.”
