We Must Resist This Assault on Democracy — Sowore Condemns Tinubu’s New Electoral Law
Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned President Bola Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) into law, describing it as a threat to democracy in Nigeria.
Reacting shortly after the signing ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, Sowore said the law is “designed to undermine and ultimately forbid free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.”
He urged Nigerians to oppose the legislation, stating, “We must resist this assault on democracy. They have dared the people. Now we must confront them, we must damn their impunity.”
Politics Nigeria earlier reported that President Tinubu signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) at a ceremony around 5:00 p.m., with principal officers of the National Assembly in attendance.
The law, which governs the conduct of elections in Nigeria, comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, scheduled for February 20 for the presidential and National Assembly polls, and March 6 for governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
Sowore’s remarks reflect growing concerns among opposition figures and civil society organisations that the new law could undermine transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
