Nigeria strengthens security ties with UK, Germany to combat terrorism

Tom Harper and Boris Bovecamp, Defence Attachés of the United Kingdom and Germany to Nigeria, have reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insurgency.

The assurance was given during their visit to the headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

Harper said the United Kingdom shares a longstanding relationship with Nigeria anchored on mutual respect and a commitment to democracy, rule of law and human rights.

He commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their efforts in tackling insurgency in the north-east.

Harper said the UK would continue to provide training support through the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT).

Bovecamp said Germany was exploring areas of future collaboration, particularly in capacity building and regional cooperation to enhance operational effectiveness against terrorism.

In his remarks, Maj-Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar, Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, lauded the contributions of the UK and German Defence Attachés to counter-insurgency operations.

Abubakar said training initiatives supported by the partners had enhanced the skills and proficiency of troops in responding to evolving security challenges.

He identified technical expertise, equipment and logistics support as key areas for further collaboration.
