‘APC Have Made It a Law to Kill Opposition’ – ADC’s Okonkwo Raises Alarm

A senior figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling party of using state power to suppress opposition voices ahead of future elections.

Kenneth Okonkwo, a member of the ADC National Working Committee and a lawyer, made the allegation while reacting to what he described as growing pressure on opposition parties across the country.

He warned that Nigeria’s democracy is being threatened by deliberate political actions aimed at weakening rival parties.

Okonkwo said the All Progressives Congress (APC) is no longer relying only on political competition but is now using institutions and laws to frustrate opposition groups. According to him, the strategy is meant to deny rival parties the space to organise, campaign, and compete fairly.

He stated:
“APC wants to block all breathing space for the opposition so that they will kill the opposition. What destroyed the PDP, for instance, is the presidential ambition of Tinubu.

They want to emasculate the opposition parties, and you can see they have made it now a law; they have made it into law.

What you are seeing is a conscious effort of a party that is unpopular, that knows it will lose if it allows a free, fair, and credible election, so they want to use institutionalised methods to rig the election before even the day of the election.”

The ADC chieftain argued that democracy cannot survive when one party dominates the political environment without checks.

He said opposition parties are facing coordinated pressure through court cases, defections, and legal tactics designed to weaken their structures.

Okonkwo also blamed internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on political ambitions linked to President Bola Tinubu, claiming that such ambitions helped fracture the party and reduce its effectiveness as a strong opposition force.
