2027: ‘Don’t Let Personal Ambition Break the Rules’ – Group Warns Atiku, Obi

A political advocacy group, The Handshake Movement (THM), has cautioned leading figures seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group specifically mentioned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, urging them to respect party rules and democratic procedures during the race for the party’s ticket.

The organisation stressed that the conduct of aspirants within the party would play a key role in determining whether the ADC can emerge as a credible political alternative in Nigeria’s political space.

In a statement issued by its National Secretary, Chinedu Okpalanma, the group called on all presidential hopefuls on the ADC platform to conduct themselves responsibly and remain committed to the party’s internal democratic process.

According to the statement, unity among the aspirants will be critical in strengthening the party and presenting a strong front ahead of the next general elections.

The group warned that political competition driven purely by personal interest could weaken the platform and damage public confidence in the party.

The movement noted that many Nigerians are already frustrated with the current situation in the country. It pointed to worsening economic conditions, growing insecurity, rising unemployment, and declining public trust in government institutions as issues that have continued to trouble citizens.

The group added that the situation has created a feeling among many Nigerians that they are excluded from governance and uncertain about the country’s future.

THM further warned that democracy often weakens gradually when political alternatives shrink, institutions are manipulated, and opposition parties become divided.

According to the group, maintaining discipline and transparency within political parties is necessary to prevent such a decline.

The statement noted that the African Democratic Congress is beginning to attract attention from Nigerians searching for credible leadership and a new political direction.

Because of this growing interest, the group urged aspirants on the party’s platform to demonstrate patriotism and a strong sense of national responsibility throughout the contest.

“Personal ambition must never be allowed to fracture the very platform that millions of Nigerians now see as a possible vehicle for national rescue,” the statement said.

THM also emphasised that the party’s presidential primary must be conducted openly and fairly. It said the process must build trust among members and produce a candidate who will have the support of other aspirants and the wider party structure.

The organisation further cautioned against the use of ethnic and religious sentiments in political campaigns. It urged Nigerians to focus more on competence, integrity, and leadership ability when choosing political leaders.

The group also disclosed plans to engage with presidential aspirants within the ADC through consultations aimed at promoting unity and strengthening the party ahead of the election.
