“PDP Has Been Sold Out” — Ex-Secretary Reveals Why They Dumped Party for Wike

A fresh crisis has hit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State, as a former top official of the party, Abubakar Bawa Kalgo, has openly declared that the opposition party has lost its direction.

He claimed the PDP has been compromised and can no longer function as a credible opposition force.

Kalgo, who served as the Secretary of the PDP in Kebbi, announced his resignation on Monday in Birnin Kebbi.

He did not stop there. He also revealed that members of the state executive committee are preparing to exit the party together.

Speaking to journalists, Kalgo said the decision was not taken lightly. He explained that it followed a joint resolution by party leaders in the state after what they described as troubling discoveries about the party’s direction.

“I can assure you that after the convention, the state executive committee unanimously agreed to leave the party because we discovered that the party had already been sold,” he said.

He went on to explain the events that led to the decision. According to him, the Kebbi PDP leadership had initially refused to take part in an earlier factional convention. That convention produced Kabiru Tanimu Turaki. Kalgo said their absence was due to a subsisting court order that restrained the exercise.

However, he noted that the situation changed when another convention linked to Nyesom Wike was held. He said the Kebbi delegates decided to participate because there was no legal barrier at the time.

“We stayed away from the earlier convention because there was a court order. But when the one led by Wike came up, there was no legal restriction, so we participated in good faith,” Kalgo explained.

Despite their initial confidence, Kalgo said events after the convention left them disappointed. He pointed to the public endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by Wike as a turning point.

“We were shocked when Wike openly endorsed President Tinubu. Initially, we thought it was his personal position, but we later discovered that many of those elected at the convention shared the same alignment,” he added.

Kalgo stressed that such alignment is unacceptable for a party that claims to be in opposition. He argued that it weakens democracy and confuses party loyalists across the country.

“The opposition party can not support the ruling party,” he said.
“As members of an opposition party, we can not be working for or aligning with the ruling party. That defeats the whole essence of democracy.”

He maintained that the planned exit from the PDP is a collective move. According to him, it involves the entire structure of the party in Kebbi State, from top to bottom.

“All the party executives, from the chairman downward, are resigning. We have agreed to move together,” he stated.

Kalgo also expressed sadness over what he described as the decline of the PDP. He said the current situation is far from the ideals on which the party was built.

“This is a party we built over decades. It is painful to see what it has become today,” he said.

He further disclosed that discussions are already ongoing among the outgoing members on their next political move. He hinted that they are considering joining another platform that would offer a stronger opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We will look for a formidable platform through which we can continue to oppose the APC-led administration,” Kalgo insisted.
