Two killed in Katsina as dispute over garri, pure water water turns violent
Two men were killed in Kokami village in Danja Local Government Area of Katsina State after a disagreement over the purchase of garri and sachet water escalated into violence.
The incident, which occurred on April 4, involved Ibrahim Auwal and a trader identified as Joe Jones, popularly known as K.C. Jones.
According to reports, the disagreement turned violent when Jones allegedly stabbed Auwal during an altercation at his shop.
Auwal was rushed to Abdullahi Makama hospital in Dabai, where he was later confirmed dead. His death reportedly triggered a reprisal attack as some youths in the community mobilised and attacked Jones. The youths allegedly killed Jones and set his body ablaze along a nearby highway.
The Katsina State Police Command said four suspects have been arrested in connection with the mob killing.
In a statement on Sunday, Abubakar Aliyu, police spokesperson in the state, said officers responded promptly and restored calm in the area.
The Katsina State Government condemned the incident, describing the violence as unfortunate and unacceptable.
Nasir Mu’azu, commissioner for internal security and home affairs, said the incident stemmed from a personal dispute.
“No individual has the right to take the law into their own hands. All those involved will be brought to justice,” he said.
Mu’azu added that security personnel have been deployed to the area and joint patrols are ongoing to maintain peace.
He said Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina, has commiserated with the families of the victims and urged community leaders to promote peaceful coexistence.
