“Tomorrow Is ADC Convention” — El-Rufai Speaks in Court Amid Ongoing Trial

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was present at the Kaduna State High Court on Monday as his ongoing trial resumed.

The case, filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), continues to draw public and political attention across the country.

Politics Nigeria reports that the former governor arrived at the court complex in a flowing traditional Agbada. The environment was tense but orderly.

Supporters, lawyers, and security operatives filled the corridor leading to the courtroom. Many observers gathered to catch a glimpse of the high-profile proceedings.

Moments before stepping into the courtroom, El-Rufai was heard speaking with a close associate. He made a brief but notable comment about the upcoming African Democratic Congress national convention.

“So tomorrow is our convention, right?” he asked.

“Insha Allah (God willing),” the associate replied.

The exchange quickly drew attention. It showed that despite his legal troubles, El-Rufai remains actively involved in opposition politics. His interest in the convention suggests he is still playing a role within the African Democratic Congress.

El-Rufai is currently facing trial alongside Amadu Sule. The charges against them include abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and the alleged conferment of undue advantage while in public office. The ICPC insists the case is backed by evidence gathered during its investigation.

In a separate case, the former governor is also being prosecuted before the Federal High Court in Kaduna. In that matter, he faces a 10-count charge bordering on abuse of office, money laundering, and fraud. The allegations involve large sums, including ₦579.6 million and $1.1 million.

El-Rufai has consistently denied all allegations. He maintains that he did not commit any wrongdoing during his time in office.

Since returning to Nigeria from Cairo, Egypt, on February 12, 2026, the former governor has remained entangled in legal battles. He was initially detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission before being handed over to the ICPC.

At one point, he was granted temporary release on compassionate grounds to attend his mother’s burial. After the burial, he returned to custody as directed by authorities.

The Federal High Court in Kaduna had earlier fixed April 14 for the hearing of his bail application. Interestingly, the same date coincides with the ADC national convention, a development that has sparked political discussions.

Leaders of the African Democratic Congress have alleged that the trial is politically motivated. They claim El-Rufai is being targeted because of his growing influence within the opposition.

However, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected these claims. The party insists that the judicial process should be allowed to run its course without interference or political interpretation.
