Lagos 2027: GAC Chairman Hints at Gov Sanwo-Olu’s Possible Successor

The Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Tajudeen Olusi, has stirred fresh political debate following remarks widely interpreted as hinting at a possible successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The development comes amid increasing speculation that the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, could emerge as a consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the party’s expected primaries.
Olusi, a close ally of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made the remarks on Wednesday during the General Assembly of Indigenous Associations in Lagos State, organised by the IBILE Eko Summit Foundation at the MUSON Centre in Onikan.
Speaking at the event themed “Addressing Urbanisation and Urban Challenges of Lagos State,” Olusi repeatedly referred to Hamzat as the “incoming Governor of Lagos,” drawing immediate attention from political stakeholders and observers.
The comment, made in a public forum attended by key figures across Lagos’ political and traditional institutions, has since been seen as a possible indication of elite preference in the state’s succession politics.
Also present at the event was former governor Babatunde Fashola, who was seated beside Hamzat, further fuelling speculation about the political undertone of the gathering.
Observers noted that Olusi’s repeated references suggested a continuity plan within the state’s leadership structure, as he at one point explicitly described Hamzat as “our incoming Governor of Lagos.”
The remarks reportedly drew noticeable reactions from delegates due to their implications for the 2027 race.
Olusi also highlighted Hamzat’s indigenous background, describing him as a “son of the soil” and “a cousin from Egbe,” underscoring his deep-rooted ties to Lagos’ political and traditional landscape.
The IBILE Eko Summit, which convenes political leaders, traditional rulers, and key stakeholders of Lagos origin, is regarded as an influential platform within the state’s political space, often serving as a forum where direction on governance and succession is subtly shaped.
