Police launches investigation into POS operations by officers in Delta [PHOTO]

The Nigeria Police Force on Thursday launched an investigation into an alleged  Point of Service operation carried out by officers in the Delta Police Command.

The spokesperson for the command, Bright Edafe also announced that the Commissioner of Police in the State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi has ordered the summary trial of two officers for engaging in extortion of a resident of the state.

Edafe noted that the CP’s order followed the exposure by Harrison Gwamnishu, a security activist who had alleged that officers of the C Division in Asaba operate a functional POS system, which has been put in place for extortion of their victims.

In a video shared on his social media pages, Gwamnishu alleged that the officers serving in the division, including their Divisional Police Officer, were involved in the misconduct.

He said, “You see that Head Bridge area, dem go Dabo (catch) you from there to inside station. Then they will milk you.”

The video posted by the activist also showed an officer and a POS operator negotiating payment of N40,000 from a yet-to-be-identified man who was arrested and brought to the division.

While the officer insisted that he had been billed to pay N50,000; the man was also charged N1,500 for the transaction by the POS operator.

Reacting to the video on X, Edafe said, the officers captured in the video Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim will proceed on an orderly trial.

He also noted that the outcome of the trial will be made public.

“The Delta State Commissioner of Police  CP Yemi Oyeniyi, PSC, ACIPM, acipm,  mnips has ordered the summary trial of AP NO: 262712 Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and F/No 519970 Cpl Miracle Ehirim captured on the embarrassing video.

“Their orderly trial will be concluded today and the outcome will be made public. SAY NO TO IMPUNITY,” Edafe wrote on X.
