JUST IN: APC asks security agencies to act on Makinde’s remarks at opposition summit

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked security agencies to take action over alleged inciting comments by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state.

In a statement on Sunday, Barr. Felix Morka, national publicity secretary of the party, said the governor’s remarks at an opposition summit in Ibadan pose a threat to national security.

Morka said Governor Makinde’s reference to the historic “Operation Wetie” amounted to dangerous rhetoric.

“The All Progressives Congress (APC) categorically condemns Governor Makinde’s incitement as reckless, and a clear and present threat to peace and national security.

“Makinde’s violent rhetoric cannot be dismissed as mere opposition posturing. His statement risks fueling anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness capable of undermining national stability.

“We therefore call on all relevant security and intelligence agencies to take this unfortunate development seriously and act to safeguard lives, property, and defend Nigeria’s democratic order,” he said.

The party said constitutional immunity does not shield public officials from accountability on issues affecting national security.

“No individual, however highly placed, should have the power to threaten or endanger the lives and safety of Nigerians or upend the country’s hard-won democratic governance under the guise of political commentary,” the statement added.

The APC also dismissed claims that Nigeria is drifting towards a one-party state, blaming opposition parties for their internal crises.

It criticised opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, accusing them of failing to provide credible alternatives.

The party said Nigeria’s democratic space remains open and competitive, with multiple parties participating in the electoral process.

It added that the APC, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains committed to governance and democratic consolidation ahead of the 2027 elections.
