BREAKING: Federal High Court Begins Handling of Pre-Election Cases

The Federal High Court of Nigeria has directed all its divisional registries to commence operations on weekends and public holidays to accommodate the filing of pre-election matters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The directive was contained in a public notice signed by the Chief Registrar of the court, Yahaya Shafa, on Thursday.

According to the court, the decision is intended to ensure compliance with the strict constitutional and statutory timelines set for filing and determining pre-election cases.

The statement read, “The Federal High Court of Nigeria formally notifies all legal practitioners that Registries in all Divisions of the Federal High Court would be open between 10:00am and 2:00pm Weekends and Public Holidays for Filing of Pre-Election Matters Only. This has become expedient to meet up with the limited time frame for filing Pre-election matters.”

The announcement comes as political parties across the country intensify their preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Several parties have already conducted their primary elections for gubernatorial, National Assembly, and state assembly positions.

While the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has concluded its party primaries, various opposition parties are working to wrap up their respective exercises before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadline on May 30.

Although, some aspirants from the ruling and opposition parties have announced displeasure with the outcome of the exercises, none as of press time, have sought redress in court.
