JUST IN: Kwankwaso Announces Gwarzo as Anointed Kano Governorship Candidate
The leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced the immediate-past deputy governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, as the anointed gubernatorial consensus candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for Kano State.
Kwankwaso made the declaration early Friday morning via his social media channels.
In the same announcement, the former Kano governor revealed that Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna—the former All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 governorship candidate who was initially tipped for the NDC top ticket—has been slotted for the Kano Central Senatorial ticket instead.
The choice of Gwarzo comes just months after he resigned from his position as deputy governor in March, a move precipitated by an impeachment notice served on him by the Kano State House of Assembly.
Insiders disclosed that Kwankwaso finalized the decision on Wednesday after series of marathon, closed-door consultations with key stakeholders and political allies within the Kwankwasiyya movement to avert internal friction ahead of Friday’s official primary affirmation exercise.
It should be recalled that Kwankwaso dumped the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), before ultimately teaming up with former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi in the NDC, where he is widely expected to serve as Obi’s presidential running mate for the 2027 elections.
Kwankwaso wrote on Friday morning:

“I am delighted to announce that His Excellency, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has been selected as our Kano NDC Gubernatorial Candidate for the upcoming elections.
“Similarly, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna will contest for the Kano Central Senatorial Seat.
“This decision was made in the spirit of equity, fairness, loyalty, and competence — values that remain central to our party and Kwankwasiyya’s progress and unity.
As we proceed with today’s affirmation exercise, I pray for a seamless, peaceful, and successful process. May Almighty Allah grant us resounding victory in the forthcoming elections.
