2027: Peter Obi reveals plan for Nigeria’s healthcare system
Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has unveiled his proposed reforms for Nigeria’s healthcare sector if elected.
Obi expressed deep concern over the country’s poor health infrastructure, high infant mortality rate, and generally low global ranking in healthcare service delivery.
In his acceptance speech shortly after being declared the NDC flagbearer, Obi described the current situation as regrettable.
“I pledge that within four years, our health insurance coverage will more than double to over 20 percent.
“Within these four years, we will increase our healthcare budget to a minimum of 10 percent of GDP, up from the current level of below 5 per cent,” Obi said.
He assured that his administration would invest heavily in healthcare institutions to support the massive training and retention of healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and other professionals, while ensuring medical facilities are adequately staffed.
“In four years, there will be a fully functional and properly managed primary healthcare centre in all 8,809 wards across the nation.
“By the end of our term, at least 50 percent of Nigeria’s 30,000 primary healthcare centres will be fully functional, properly manned, and dedicated to serving the populace,” the former governor added.
