Cholera outbreak: Five people confirmed dead in Plateau
Five people have been confirmed dead from a cholera outbreak that has affected some communities in Plateau State.
The Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr Nicholas Baamlong, disclosed that the state has recorded 55 suspected cases of the disease.
According to him, 11 cases have been laboratory-confirmed, with five deaths.
Speaking to journalists in Jos on Sunday, June 14, 2026, Dr Baamlong said the cases were recorded in three communities — Pushit, Mangu 1, and Mangu 2 — all in Mangu Local Government Area.
He stated that the state government has also taken decisive steps to contain the outbreak, with the Ministry of Health intensifying public health interventions.
These include the deployment of additional Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to the affected wards, scaling up of treatment centres and isolation capacity, and emergency procurement of Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) Kits, intravenous fluids, and essential drugs.
“The activation of the IMS ensures a coordinated, efficient, and accountable response structure in line with national and international emergency response frameworks,” Baamlong said.
He advised residents and people in neighbouring communities to remain vigilant and observe preventive measures, including drinking safe water, maintaining proper hand hygiene, avoiding open defecation, and ensuring proper waste disposal.
Dr Baamlong also urged the public to report all suspected cases immediately to the nearest healthcare facility.
