Flooding: Kaduna govt presents N2bn compensation cheques to victims
The Kaduna State Government has presented N2 billion in compensation cheques to victims of flooding in the state.
Governor Uba Sani handed over the cheques to the affected persons during the groundbreaking ceremony for the N34 billion Rigasa/Tudun Wada Flood and Gully Erosion Control Project on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
In a statement, Governor Sani described the compensation and the new project as part of the state government’s commitment to tackling the persistent challenges of flooding, gully erosion, and environmental degradation across Kaduna State.
“This important intervention reflects a fundamental principle that guides our administration: that development must not only deliver progress, but must also uphold justice, compassion, and respect for human dignity,” the governor said.
The project, which spans approximately 17 kilometres, aims to provide a lasting solution to the flooding and gully erosion that have plagued Rigasa and Tudun Wada for decades.
“Through a carefully structured Resettlement Action Plan, we are supporting more than 1,200 Project Affected Households, ensuring that in the pursuit of collective progress, no citizen bears an unjust burden,” Sani added.
He noted that the project, expected to be completed within 18 months, will significantly reduce flood risks, stabilise erosion-prone areas, safeguard homes and critical infrastructure, preserve livelihoods, and enhance climate resilience.
“More importantly, it is expected to directly and indirectly impact over two million people, advancing our broader vision of environmental sustainability and inclusive development across Kaduna State,” he said.
The governor expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the affected communities and urged contractors to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, quality, and accountability.
“Together, we are building a safer, greener, more resilient, and more prosperous Kaduna State for generations to come,” Sani said.
