BREAKING: Popular Actor, Olu Jacobs Dies at 84
Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
Jacobs died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, according to an announcement by his family.
His son, Olusoji Jacobs, confirmed the development in a post shared on Instagram.
He described the late actor as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle while announcing that the family was mourning his death.
The family also appealed to members of the public, particularly bloggers and social media influencers, to give them privacy as they come to terms with the loss.

The announcement brings to an end the life of one of Nigeria’s most recognised actors, whose career covered several decades and crossed theatre, television and film.
Olu Jacobs was born on July 11, 1942.
He developed an interest in acting at a young age and later travelled to the United Kingdom, where he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
His professional career took him beyond Nigeria, with appearances in British television productions, stage performances and international films.
He eventually returned to Nigeria and became one of the familiar faces of the country’s growing film industry.
Jacobs featured in several Nigerian productions and became known for his ability to take on demanding roles, particularly characters that required authority, depth and strong command of dialogue.
His career also extended beyond acting. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was involved in the Lufodo Group and the development of the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.
The institution became part of the couple’s efforts to contribute to theatre, film and the training of young talents.
For many Nigerians, Jacobs was not simply another movie actor. His voice, appearance and manner of delivering lines became familiar features of Nigerian television and cinema.
He worked during a period when Nigerian theatre and television were developing rapidly and remained active as the local film industry evolved into what is now widely known as Nollywood.
Jacobs also received several recognitions during his career.
He was honoured with the national award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR, in 2011 for his contribution to the Nigerian film industry.
He also received the Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
His contribution to the arts was not limited to Nigeria. Before becoming one of Nollywood’s leading figures, Jacobs had already built experience through British television and international productions.
His film credits included appearances in productions such as The Dogs of War, Pirates and Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend. He also featured in several British television series before returning to Nigeria.
His marriage to Joke Silva also became one of the notable relationships in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
The two actors met through their work in theatre and eventually married. They later worked together on several creative projects and built the Lufodo brand.
Silva remained closely involved in Jacobs’ life during his later years, particularly after his health challenges became known publicly.
