2027: Details Emerge As Atiku Hosts Aisha Buhari in Abuja
Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday, received former First Lady Aisha Buhari at his residence in Abuja, in a meeting that has drawn attention ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku disclosed the visit in a post on his X handle, describing the meeting with the widow of late former President Muhammadu Buhari as “warm and deeply appreciated.”
Although the former Vice President did not reveal the purpose of Aisha’s visit, his remarks centred on the need to prioritise the welfare and dignity of Nigerians amid the country’s economic challenges.
Atiku said the meeting served as a reminder to those seeking a better Nigeria of their responsibility to put the interests and future of citizens first.
“Today, I was delighted to receive former First Lady, H.E. Aisha Buhari,” Atiku wrote.
He added that families across the country were being stretched by the rising cost of food, transportation, education, healthcare and other essential needs.
According to him, Nigerians deserve an economy that rewards hard work, restores opportunities and enables families to live with dignity and hope.
“That is the Nigeria we must build together, a country that works for its people again,” he said.
“We must ease the burden, restore hope and Make Nigeria Affordable Again.”
Earlier this month, the ADC explained Atiku’s absence from an opposition summit in Abuja, saying the gathering was primarily focused on discussions among political parties rather than individual presidential candidates.
The latest meeting is also not the first recent encounter between Atiku and Aisha Buhari.
In February 2026, Atiku hosted Aisha, her daughter Hanan and other members of the Buhari family in Saudi Arabia while both families were in the country for Umrah.
Aisha’s latest engagement with Atiku comes against the backdrop of renewed political interest in the Buhari family.
In May, Yusuf Buhari won the APC primary for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’adua Federal Constituency seat in Katsina State, polling 6,386 votes against Auwal Daura’s 322 votes.
The outcome generated interest within political circles in the Daura axis, where the Buhari family has maintained significant political influence.
Aisha has also continued to publicly promote the legacy of her late husband, who died in London on July 13, 2025.
In July, she said Muhammadu Buhari’s greatest legacy was his commitment to education and human capital development while performing the groundbreaking ceremony for a Computer Science Complex at Al-Qalam University, Katsina.
The project was being financed with proceeds from the book From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, which documents the late former President’s life and public service.
Aisha said the project was intended to preserve Buhari’s legacy through investment in education, knowledge and innovation rather than through monuments.
While neither Atiku nor Aisha disclosed any political discussions during Wednesday’s meeting, the encounter comes at a period of heightened political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
