BREAKING: Former Delta Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Is Dead

Former Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has died at the age of 71, following a period of illness, according to a family source.

Uduaghan reportedly died on the morning of Monday, October 19, 2026, at a hospital in Abuja, where he was receiving medical attention.

A member of his family confirmed the development to Channels Television, describing his death as a devastating loss to his relatives and the many people whose lives he touched during his years in public service.

The death of the former governor marks the passing of a prominent figure in Delta State politics, whose career spanned medicine, public administration and elective office.

Uduaghan served as governor for eight years, from 2007 to 2015, and remained involved in political affairs after completing his tenure.

As of the time of filing this report, the Delta State Government had yet to release an official statement confirming his death.

Further details surrounding his illness, the circumstances of his final days and funeral arrangements had also not been made public.

Uduaghan was born on October 22, 1954, in Delta State. He trained as a medical doctor before venturing into public administration and politics.

His professional background in healthcare formed the foundation of his early years in government, where he was entrusted with responsibilities in the state’s health sector.

He studied medicine at the University of Benin and obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree.

He also received additional training in anaesthesia. Before entering government, he worked in medical facilities in different parts of Nigeria, including Warri and Benin City, and later established his private medical practice.

His entry into Delta State politics came during the administration of former Governor James Ibori. In August 1999, Uduaghan was appointed Commissioner for Health, a position he held until 2003.

His responsibilities included overseeing the state’s health sector and participating in efforts to improve healthcare delivery.

In June 2003, he was appointed Secretary to the State Government, a strategic position that placed him at the centre of policy coordination and the administration of government affairs.

The appointment further strengthened his political standing and prepared him for a bigger role in the state.

Uduaghan eventually emerged as the successor to Ibori and became governor in May 2007 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

His emergence followed the 2007 governorship election, which was later nullified by the courts. He returned to the contest and secured victory in a rerun election in 2008.

He went on to win another term in the 2011 governorship election, allowing him to remain in office until May 2015.

His eight-year administration covered a period when Delta State continued to grapple with issues surrounding infrastructure, healthcare, education, employment and the management of its oil resources.

As governor, Uduaghan operated in one of Nigeria’s major oil-producing states, where expectations surrounding public spending, development projects and the welfare of residents remained high.

At the end of his second term in May 2015, he handed over to Ifeanyi Okowa, who won the governorship election under the PDP.

Okowa had previously served as Secretary to the State Government during Uduaghan’s administration, continuing a political relationship that had developed over several years.

Uduaghan did not immediately withdraw from public affairs after leaving office. He remained involved in political activities in Delta State and the PDP.

His political affiliation changed in August 2018 when he left the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The move came ahead of the 2019 general elections, during which he contested for the Delta South Senatorial District seat.

He was defeated by the PDP candidate, James Manager, who retained the seat.

In 2020, Uduaghan returned to the PDP after consultations with political leaders in the state.

No further details were immediately available regarding the nature of his illness or how long he had been receiving treatment in Abuja.

The Delta State Government had yet to issue an official announcement at the time of filing this report.

It was also unclear when the family would announce funeral arrangements or whether the state government would make additional statements concerning his passing.

Uduaghan was due to celebrate his 72nd birthday on October 22, 2026, just three days after the date of his reported death.

His passing, if formally confirmed by the relevant authorities, would bring to an end the life of a former state chief executive whose career moved from medical practice to some of the highest levels of political leadership in Delta State.

More details are expected as the family and the state government respond to the development.
