Leaders and governorship candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have converged on Abuja for a meeting with the party’s presidential candidate, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, and other national leaders.

The meeting, which brought together prominent figures within the opposition party, is expected to focus on preparations for the forthcoming elections.

The ADC governorship candidate in Benue State, Herman Hembe, disclosed the development in a post on X, where he shared photographs of his arrival at the Abuja residence of the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark.

Hembe said he arrived at the residence ahead of an important meeting with Atiku and other national leaders of the party.

He also disclosed that several governorship candidates from different parts of the country were present at the gathering.

Among those he met was the ADC governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

Hembe said, “Earlier today, I arrived at the Abuja residence of our National Chairman, Distinguished Senator David Alechenu Mark, ahead of an important meeting with our party’s presidential candidate, H.E. Atiku Abubakar, and other national leaders of the African Democratic Congress.”

He described the gathering as an opportunity for party leaders and candidates to exchange ideas, strengthen their relationship and develop a common understanding of the challenges and responsibilities ahead.

According to him, the meeting would also provide an opportunity to discuss the party’s preparations and the direction it hopes to take as the 2027 general elections approach.

“This meeting brings us together as leaders and candidates to discuss the journey ahead, our party’s preparations and the direction we hope to take as we approach the 2027 general elections,” he stated.

Hembe added that the engagement was important in building a stronger political platform capable of presenting Nigerians with an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“As we look towards 2027, our focus remains on building a stronger party and presenting a clear vision for a better Nigeria and a better Benue State,” he said.

The meeting comes as ADC moves to kickstart its presidential campaign.

The ADC had earlier postponed its October 31 campaign flag-off in Sokoto, citing concerns over a possible breakdown of law and order.

The party subsequently announced Wednesday, November 4, as the new date for the commencement of the campaign.

ADC chieftains have accused the Sokoto State Government of frustrating their political activities, including allegedly mounting pressure on hotel operators to cancel accommodation arrangements for party members and supporters.

The party also alleged attacks on its members and supporters in the state, including an incident involving its governorship candidate, Manir Dan’iya. The allegations have prompted calls for investigations by security agencies.

Despite the controversies, the ADC has maintained its determination to proceed with its political activities in Sokoto.
