7 remaining charges against Kanu won’t stand – Ezeife opens up

Former Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife has said the seven remaining charges leveled by the Federal Government against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), cannot stand the test of time.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Ezeife, while speaking after Kanu’s appearance in court on Friday, expressed his belief that the IPOB leader is gradually on his way to freedom.

He urged those he described as lovers of freedom to remain calm and allow justice to prevail in Kanu’s trial.

“If Kanu was standing trial on a 15-counts charge and eight of the charge were struck out for lack of merit, do you think the rest of the charges can stand the test of time? Of course not,” Vanguard quotes Ezeife as saying.

This newspaper recalls that the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday struck out eight of the 15 counts filed against Kanu.

Kanu was accused of various offences in the 15 counts, including treasonable felony and terrorism, offences he allegedly committed during his separatist campaigns.

But the judge, Binta Nyako, struck out eight of the charges in her ruling on Kanu’s preliminary objection challenging the validity of the charges.

Mrs Nyako ruled that Counts 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 14 were incompetent, for not disclosing any valid offences against the defendant.
