Police Arrest Osun PDP Chairman
The Osun State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sunday Bisi, has reportedly been arrested by police personnel during the ongoing governorship election in the state.
Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, disclosed this in a post on his verified X account on Saturday.
Davido alleged that Bisi was arrested at his residence in Ilesa at about 2pm shortly after returning from voting.
He wrote: “Osun PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi has been arrested in his Ilesa Residence around 2pm by the Police. Police invaded his house accusing him of moving around on the day of election.
“The same agency that ignored APC thugs harassing voters. It is well.”
Reacting to the development, Governor Ademola Adeleke condemned the reported arrest, describing it as an abuse of law enforcement and an attempt to intimidate his supporters.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor said Bisi was accosted at his home shortly after returning from voting and taken to an undisclosed location.
Adeleke said no reason had been communicated for the arrest, alleging that the development was part of a wider attempt to prevent PDP supporters from monitoring the collation of results.
“Information reaching me indicates that Hon. Bisi was accosted in his home in Ilesa shortly after he returned after voting, and whisked him away to yet to be known location,” the statement said.
The governor further alleged that the arrest was part of a broader plan to restrict his supporters from accessing collation centres and potentially alter the outcome of the election.
“This latest sweep on my supporters, I have authoritatively learnt, is part of a broader plan to give the APC unhindered access to change results at collation centres and upturn our wins at the poll,” Adeleke alleged.
He described the development as “the biggest assault on democracy” and called for Bisi’s immediate release.
Adeleke also appealed for the release of what he described as other “political prisoners” across the state, insisting that voters should be allowed to freely exercise their democratic rights without intimidation or coercion.
Politics Nigeria reported earlier that the campaign council of Governor Adeleke , Imole Campaign Council, raised the alarm over the alleged arrest and intimidation of Accord Party members by soldiers during ongoing Saturday’s governorship election.
Spokesman for the council, Pelumi Olajengbesi, in a statement issued on Saturday, alleged that soldiers invaded Ijebu-Ijesa in Oriade Local Government Area around noon and began arresting Accord Party members who were at polling units to cast their votes.
According to the council, the soldiers were allegedly accompanied by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and were not among the troops officially designated for election duties in Ijebu-Ijesa or Oriade LGA.
The campaign council described the development as unacceptable, alleging that the soldiers were being used to intimidate supporters of the Accord Party during the election.
“Soldiers must not make themselves tools in the hands of desperate power-seeking politicians,” the statement said
“We call on the Chief of Army Staff to stop the targeted arrest and intimidation of Accord Party members by soldiers manipulated by the APC,’’ the council added.
