Ukraine Needs A New President – Trump Declares

United States President Donald Trump has called for Ukraine to elect a new president, accusing President Volodymyr Zelensky of repeatedly rejecting opportunities to reach an agreement to end the war with Russia.

Trump made the statement while speaking to reporters at the White House on Saturday.

He argued that Zelensky had failed to take advantage of several opportunities to negotiate an end to the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The American president said he believed the Ukrainian leader could have brought the war to an end through negotiations but had repeatedly failed to reach an agreement.

“Zelensky could have settled this war many times, and he chose not to. It’s very difficult,” Trump told reporters.

He also insisted that the conflict would not have started if he had been president when Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.

Trump’s latest remarks reflect his continued criticism of Zelensky over the handling of the war and his position on negotiations with Moscow. The US president has repeatedly expressed frustration with the Ukrainian leader over the failure to secure a settlement.

During Saturday’s appearance, Trump also criticised Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries, arguing that the strikes could create problems for international energy supplies and increase fuel costs for American farmers and ranchers.

The comments came days after the United States reached an agreement with Moscow to temporarily suspend sanctions on Russian diesel exports.

Zelensky had warned that allowing millions of tonnes of Russian diesel to be supplied to the United States under the new arrangement would generate revenue for Moscow that could be used to finance its ongoing war against Ukraine.

However, Trump argued that Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil infrastructure could have consequences beyond the battlefield, particularly because of Russia’s role in supplying diesel to international markets.

According to the US president, he had urged Zelensky to avoid targeting Russian refineries because of their importance to global fuel supplies.

“We said you [Zelensky] can do whatever you want to Russia; don’t hurt the refineries because that’s the world’s problem,” Trump said.

He accused the Ukrainian president of disregarding the potential economic consequences of the attacks, particularly for American agricultural workers who depend on diesel to operate machinery and transport their products.

“And he wants to make problems for the world; he wants to make problems for our farmers, our ranchers, with diesel fuel because Russia supplies a large portion of the diesel fuel throughout the world,” Trump stated.

“But what does he do? He goes and hits the diesel fuel. Do you know what I suggest? I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal because he [Zelensky] could have made many deals, but for some reason he never does,” the US president said.

Trump then called for Zelensky to be replaced.

“I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” he declared.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, following years of tensions that included Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the outbreak of fighting in eastern Ukraine.

The war has caused destruction, civilian casualties and the displacement of millions of people. Russian forces continue to occupy significant portions of Ukrainian territory, while Ukrainian troops have maintained their resistance with support from Western countries, including the United States and European allies.

Despite several diplomatic initiatives and discussions about possible ceasefire arrangements, efforts to secure a lasting settlement have yet to end the conflict.

The US president’s criticism of Zelensky follows disputes between his administration and sections of the American media over coverage of his policies and decisions.

In September, Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would no longer be allowed to access the White House, accusing the organisations of repeatedly publishing what he described as false reports about his administration.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the restrictions would take effect immediately and accused the three outlets of reporting what he called “FAKE NEWS”.

“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them ‘alive.’ Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” Trump wrote.

He also accused the media organisations of publishing false information about his presidency, administration and the United States.

“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” he added.

Trump suggested that other media organisations could face similar restrictions.
