Ondo Catholic Diocese Moves Easter Vigil to 5pm Amid Rising Security Concerns

The Catholic Diocese of Ondo State has announced a change to this year’s Easter Vigil schedule, citing rising security concerns in the state and across Nigeria.

In a directive dated March 30, 2026, issued from the Office of the Chancellor and addressed “To: All Priests, Religious and lay faithful of Ondo Diocese,” the Church explained that the decision responds to “the realities of our time, particularly the prevailing insecurity in our country and our State.”

The statement, signed by the Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Michael O. Eniayeju, conveyed the directive of the Bishop of Ondo Diocese, Most Rev. Jude Arogundade, mandating an earlier start for Easter Vigil services across all parishes and communities.

According to the notice, “The bishop, Most Rev. Jude Arogundade, has directed that the Easter Vigil in all parishes and communities of the diocese this year shall commence at 5:00 p.m. prompt.”

The Diocese stressed that the adjustment was made out of “pastoral prudence and sensitivity” in light of heightened insecurity, while reaffirming the faithful’s commitment to their beliefs.

“We remain steadfast in our Christian faith in the resurrection of our Lord, which the Easter Vigil solemnly celebrates,” the statement read.

The directive also highlighted collective responsibility in addressing security challenges, noting, “Security, as it were, is everybody’s concern.” Parishes and worshippers were urged to enhance safety measures and maintain prayers for peace and protection.

“All parishes and communities are enjoined to beef up their security strategies, and let us continually pray for peace and protection in our land,” it added.

The message concluded with a call for divine intercession: “May Our Lady Queen of Peace intercede for us always.”

This move reflects growing caution among religious institutions in parts of Nigeria, where security threats have prompted adjustments to public gatherings and worship activities.

In February, the Nigeria Police Force advised all religious organisations in Ondo State to suspend vigils and night services following the abduction of six members of the Celestial Church of Christ in Uso.

The victims were kidnapped on February 25 during a midnight service along the Uso/Owo Expressway in Owo Local Government Area. Addressing the media in Akure, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adebowale Lawal, said the command had alerted security formations across the state and issued a precautionary advisory to religious leaders of all faiths to suspend night worship for now.

The advisory impacts various nocturnal gatherings, including Islamic night prayers, Christian vigils, and traditional rites. Despite government measures, insecurity remains a persistent concern in Ondo State and other parts of Nigeria.
