Broadcasters to boycott FCT briefings over Wike’s remark on shooting journalist

The Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has threatened to boycott press briefings by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, following his remarks on shooting a Channels Television broadcaster, Seun Okinbaloye.

The association also demanded a full retraction of the minister’s statement in clear terms and a public apology to Okinbaloye and the media community at large.

Recall that during a live media chat on Channels Television on Friday, April 3, Wike had said that if he had the means, he would have shot Okinbaloye over his style of interview.

Wike’s words, “If there was any way to break the screen, I would have shot him.”

Reacting to the minister’s outburst, IBAN, the recognised umbrella body representing the interests of all independent broadcast stations across Nigeria described Wike’s statement as having violent intent.

The association in a statement signed by Ahmed Ramalan and Fidelis Duker, its chairman and Acting General Secretary said such language, especially from a public official can be perceived as intimidation and risks normalising hostility toward the media.

Citing data from the Press Freedom Index which states that Nigeria ranks 122 out of 180 countries, IBAN stated that journalists in the country already face significant challenges, including surveillance, attacks, and arbitrary arrests.

“Remarks of this nature from a senior government figure only worsen an already difficult environment for media professionals,” IBAN said.

Standing in solidarity with Okinbaloye and all broadcasters, the association said the minister must reassure the people of his commitment to non-violence and respect for press freedom, consistent with Sections 22 and 39 of the Nigerian Constitution (1999, as amended).

It added that Wike’s failure to meet its demand would force IBAN to advise all independent broadcast stations – whose interests this association solely represents – to suspend coverage of all press briefings, media chats, and official news conferences hosted by the FCT Minister.

“This is not a step IBAN takes lightly. However, independent broadcasters must protect their personnel and uphold the principle that violent rhetoric will not be normalised or rewarded with platform access,” the association added
