Protesters march in South Africa, demand closure of nightclub owned by Nigerians

Hundreds of protesters on Wednesday marched through KuGompo city in South Africa, demanding the closure of a nightclub reportedly linked to Nigerians.
The demonstrators accused the establishment, known as California Tavern, of alleged drug-related activities.
Nondumiso Tyiso, one of the organisers of the march, claimed drugs were being sold at the nightclub.
The protest follows demonstrations last week by anti-immigrant groups Operation Dudula. The earlier protests were reportedly triggered by the “crowning” of a Nigerian “king” in Buffalo City.
During last week’s demonstrations, several Somali-owned shops were looted and vehicles were set on fire.
On Wednesday, many immigrant-owned businesses in KuGompo city centre shut down amid fears of possible attacks. Police maintained a heavy presence in the area.
The protesters said they intended to submit a memorandum to the owner of the building housing the nightclub.
A confrontation occurred when protesters attempted to enter the Belgrave Hotel, which contains the nightclub. Police officers prevented the protesters from entering the building.
Hazel Mqala, spokesperson of the KuGompo city police, said law enforcement officers were present to prevent violence and property damage.
“We have a responsibility to protect everyone,” she said.
Mqala said police had previously confiscated drugs during patrols in the area. She added that officers were deployed to maintain order during the protest.
In a statement later on Wednesday, Nobuntu Gantana, Brigadier of the South African Police Service (SAPS), said security forces dispersed some individuals involved in criminal activities.
“A few sporadic opportunistic criminal elements” had been dispersed with stun grenades and rubber bullets, she said.
Gantana said one suspect had been arrested for assaulting a police officer, adding that he is expected to appear in court.
She added that police presence remains in the area and authorities had opened 11 criminal cases following last week’s protests. She said two people had been arrested in connection with the earlier unrest.
Meanwhile, the owners of the Belgrave Hotel said they had decided to close down California Tavern.
