The House of Representatives has asked the federal government and other sub-national governments to ban the use of a popular children’s textbook, “Queen Premier”, in schools nationwide.
The lawmakers asked the federal, state and local governments to ban the book because it contains words like “gay”, “eros”, and others considered to be “offensive.”
The call for the ban followed the adoption of a motion moved by Sulaiman Gumi (PDP, Zamfara) on Thursday during plenary.
The controversial content within the textbook has sparked concerns among members of the House, prompting their demand for a nationwide ban.
In arriving at the decision, the House of Representatives stated that it is crucial to maintain a delicate balance between educational freedom and societal sensitivities.
The move is expected to trigger discussions and debates on educational material and curriculum standards in the green chambers.
