Why 2023 elections may not hold in several north-west states

Nigerian governors have told President Muhammadu Buhari that the 2023 general elections may not hold in several north-west states as a result of insecurity.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that northwest Nigerian states comprise seven territories — Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Kebbi, Zamfara and Sokoto.

The governors sent this message to Buhari via a policy brief delivered to the president in July 2022.

Worried by the worsening insecurity in the country, the governors, across political parties, counseled President Buhari to properly address the situation.

He was advised to establish military bases in some areas in the north.

“Expedite promised the establishment of military bases in Birnin Gwari, Rijana, Kachia and Mararraban Jos in Kaduna State, and Kontagora and Gwada in Niger State,” the brief reads in part.

“Ensure operations prevent Boko Haram terrorists from attacking the Shiroro R2 transmission line (R1 already down and inaccessible), which will throw the entire north-west and Niger into darkness.

“Renewed appeal for a Theatre Command in the north-west along with deployment of MNJTF due to borders with Niger and Benin Republics that are major sources of arms and ammunition.”
