BREAKING: Governor Peter Mbah Declares End to Sit-at-Home in Enugu

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has announced the abolishment of the weekly sit-at-home protest held every Monday.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that starting from Monday, June 6, 2023, the governor has declared that there will be no more such restrictions.

He believes that such orders have been detrimental to the creativity, entrepreneurship, and productivity of the state.

Governor Mbah expressed his government’s willingness to engage in dialogue with individuals who have legitimate grievances in order to bring lasting peace and security to Enugu State.

This newspaper reports that to foster national healing, the governor appealed to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Governor Mbah conveyed this request on Thursday during his first security council meeting, well attended by the heads of all security agencies at the Government House in Enugu.

He stated, “I call on our newly sworn-in president, President Bola Tinubu, to actively work towards the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. We believe that his release will expedite the healing process that Nigeria currently needs. It will also demonstrate his administration’s willingness to extend a brotherly hand of fellowship to the Igbo people.”

Governor Mbah reminded the people of Enugu that he had swiftly taken action upon his inauguration by signing three Executive Orders to ensure good governance in the state.

One of these orders was Executive Order 002, which aimed to remove unauthorised street barriers within the state within 100 days.

“There is no time to waste. The clock has started ticking on the mandate you have given me and the promises I made,” he emphasised.

Governor Mbah further highlighted the crucial connection between his promises to the people and the vibrancy of commerce in the state.

He expressed his belief in transitioning from a public service-driven economy to one driven by the private sector. To achieve this, the governor stressed the importance of liberating markets from restrictive barriers to commerce.

He stated, “For us to move from a public service economy to a private sector-driven one, we must remove the obstacles hindering commerce in our markets. If we truly desire an influx of private sector practitioners and investors in Enugu State, we must reject the perception of being an unproductive people.”

Governor Mbah denounced the sit-at-home protests held on Mondays, as they hamper the spirit of entrepreneurship and commerce for which the Igbo people are renowned.

He firmly stated that there will be no observance of any sit-at-home protests throughout Enugu State, effective from Monday, June 6, 2023. The government will enforce this decision using all available means.

He urged market traders, businesses, industries, schools, civil servants, and all workers in Enugu State to reclaim their sense of industry and pride. By doing so, they would contribute to the realisation of their collective mandate.
