BREAKING: Heavy security at EFCC offices in Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan over planned protest

Security measures around the offices of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja, Lagos and Ibadan have been beefed up over the planned protest today, Friday, July 5.

Politics Nigeria reports that some Nigerians had planned to embark on what the termed #ReformEFCC protest over recent attacks on “innocent” civilians by EFCC operatives especially during sting operations.

The EFCC had fingered a former governor and two ex-ministers of spearheading the protest against the agency.

In Lagos, operatives of the Lagos State Anti-Crime Outfit – Rapid Response Squad (RRS) with their vans are stationed strategically at routes leading to the EFCC office.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) also among the joint security forces with patrol vans, heavy anti-riot gun trucks and Black Marias.

According to a X user, @PidomNigeria, “This #ReformEFCC’s protest today is not sponsored by anyone, it’s not political, neither does it have any political undertone in it.

“It is purely a people centered organic peaceful protest, calling for a much needed reformation of EFCC, for a better performance. Anyone who is seen calling for Tinubu must go, or End APC at the protest venues, in order to give this peaceful protest a political coloration, will be handed over to the police by protesters.”

Some of their demands include respect for fundamental human rights of citizens and that EFCC operatives stop the indiscriminate arrest and invasion of people’s homes.

“They should also stop destroying people’s properties in the name of sting operation, stop the profiling of young Nigerians, stop assaulting and manhandling Nigerians,” the X user added.

Another X user, Steve @Foremann123 wrote: “It is the same at the Ibadan office in Iyaganku GRA. They put many security men there too. It seems the govt has woken up after the endsars protest. They don’t take chances again.”
