Anglican Church Speaks on Presidential Election Petitions, Fuel Subsidy Removal

The Anglican Church has called on the Godswill Akpabio-led National Assembly to amend the Nigerian Constitution.

The church said the constitution must be amended to make it mandatory for election disputes to be resolved before a winner is sworn in as president of the country.

According to the church, this would allow the winner to concentrate on the job of governance without distractions.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the third session of the 18th Synod of the Diocese of Enugu, Anglican Communion, held at the Cathedral Church of the Good Shepherd.

The church expressed its dissatisfaction with the sudden removal of fuel subsidy without any palliatives.

According to the church, the action has increased the hardship in the country.

The church also lashed out at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the conduct of the 2023 presidential election.

It added that INEC’s actions portrayed the institution as “being partisan”.

The Synod called for the strengthening of INEC by ensuring the appointments of credible individuals as chairman and commissioners.
