The Northern Elders Forum, NEF has reacted to a statement by Southern Governors that the 2023 presidency should be zone to the Southern part of the country.
The group in a statement on Tuesday, rejected the position of the governors stating that the Presidential office is a democratic and not a rotational position.
The group warned the governors that the north will not be threatened or blackmailed into giving up its right to a democratic office adding that it can be sought after by a person irrespective of where he/she comes from.
“NEF sees the decision of the Southern governors as an expression of sentiment that could be best discussed within a political process.”
“We are running a democratic government and decisions over where the next president comes from are basically decisions that will be made by voters exercising their rights to choose which candidate best serves their interest.”, the statement signed by the group’s publicity director, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed read.
He admonished the southern governors to influence their parties to zone the presidency to Southern states and then work to convince Nigerian voters from all parts of the country to vote for that candidate.
Sometimes I Wonder if these Northerners believe in the rule of justice and fairness. Zoning and rotation of a political position is done in the spirit and promotion of equity and fainess with the need to give all regions that make up any National integration a sence of belonging. They are raising this disagreement because they feel that with their dense population, they have an edge over other regions in addition to their unconsitutional underage voting tactics. It has been three political dispensations within this republic and all of then featured Northerners yet they’re not satisfied. Raising any objection to this laudable motion of the southern govs is a demonstration of selfishness which they need to rid themselves of because come 2023, presidency by a southerner is a done deal.
