‘Six’ dead in Ibadan accident

At least six people have died in an accident that occurred on Monday morning at Celica area of Ibadan, Oyo State, South-West Nigeria.

A Bovas Oil and Gas Petroleum Company Limited tanker hit a Micra, which made the car fall into a canal alongside the tanker, resulting in multiple deaths.

Micra drivers are annoyed and have blocked the road to Ife, Osun State. As of the time of publishing this report, there is traffic along that road.

Witnesses – who blame the accident on bad roads – say rescue operation has been ongoing since 7 am.

Recall the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) announced that 2,233 Nigerians lost their lives in road crashes in the first four months of 2021.

Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshal said the death toll came from 4,459 accidents involving 28,826 persons. The figures, from January to April, indicated that 691 died in January, 497 in February, 480 in March, and 565 in April.

Boboye, who identified speeding as the major cause of accidents in the country, said the proliferation of aged vehicles on the roads also contributed to the high level of accidents.
