COVID-19: Sunday services, Friday prayers banned indefinitely in Lagos

Lagos state government has pronounced a ban on religious gatherings of worshippers not more than 50 worshippers.

The decision was in agreement with religious leaders, this paper learnt.

This was part of the communique read by the commissioner for Home Affairs, Prince Anofiu Elegushi, after a meeting with religious leaders in the state at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa on Wednesday.

Present at the meeting/briefing were the Lagos Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Alexander Bamgbola and Grand Chief Imam of Lagos state, Sheikh Suleiman Abou Nolla and other regional religious leaders from all over the state

On Wednesday afternoon, the state Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, stated that a meeting was being held with religious leaders on how to handle the present situation, where it might be suggested that they stop Friday and Sunday services.

The commissioner who spoke with the press at the secretariat, said in the interest of the public, all stakeholders must comply with the outcome of the meeting.

POLITICS NIGERIA earlier reported how the federal government placed visa restrictions on visitors from China, Italy and other countries with over one thousand cases of Coronavirus.

The latest development will take effect from March 21 and last for four weeks.

Coronavirus disease, also known as COVID-19 has dealt a blow on the world economy and international engagements. Although Nigeria recorded the first COVID-19 case on February 24, seven more cases have been confirmed afterwards.

Amongst the five new cases of Wednesday are; a serving NYSC member in Ekiti state and a six-week-old baby.
