DSS Secures Court Order for Continued Detention of CBN’s Emefiele and EFCC’s Bawa

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly obtained an ex parte order from the court, granting them the authority to detain the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, and the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, beyond the stipulated 48-hour limit as stated in Section 35 of the Constitution.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that concerns have been raised as Emefiele has already spent a total of seven nights in detention without any charges being brought against him in a court of law.

According to a government source, the DSS’s motive behind this move is to dissuade Emefiele from taking legal action to protect his fundamental human rights.

The source explained, “The DSS obtained an ex parte order from the court earlier this week, allowing them to extend Emefiele’s detention beyond the constitutional 48-hour limit. The intention is to preempt any potential lawsuits that could claim violations of his fundamental rights. It is a strategic move to avoid legal complications.”

The source further revealed that a similar order was obtained on Thursday for Bawa’s detention. This order will enable the DSS to conclude their interrogation and investigation into the allegations levelled against him.

This newspaper reports that as of press time, the details surrounding these allegations have not been disclosed.
